Cognitive accessibility is a term traditionally used in web design to describe inclusive practices for creating equitable online environments for people with cognitive and learning disabilities. However, applying cognitive accessibility practices in our online classrooms can benefit all students regardless of ability. This presentation will introduce the concept of cognitive accessibility, its role in a Culture of Care, and its implications for effective instructor-student communications in the online classroom. Participants will be provided with resources for creating online communications that (1) are considerate of students’ cognitive loads, (2) perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust; and (3) utilize scaffolding as inclusive practice.
