It may have taken Karrie Newby nearly 25 years to earn her Associate of Arts degree, but once she got the ball rolling, there was no stopping her. Now at 61 years of age, this professor not only has her BA in Heath Care Administration, Master of Arts in Education, and doctorate in psychology, she’s also earned 19 certifications and three additional degrees.

Growing up in a rural farming community, the only adults Dr. Stephanie Anderson knew with a college degree were her teachers and her doctor. An education beyond high school, she observed, was mostly earned in technical and trade schools.

When it comes to commitment, John Hawk knows how to follow through. In addition to his 18 years of service in the U.S. Army, the 47-year-old resident of Hopewell, Virginia, has been on a dedicated pursuit of higher education at Ashford University* since 2014.

More than 25 years ago, John Felger set out to earn his degree at a traditional brick and mortar college. He didn’t finish but always vowed to someday complete his journey. Now in his 50s, John is back in school to earn his Bachelor of Science in Information Technology at the University of Arizona Global Campus, and for his effort, he is UAGC's January 2021 Student of the Month.

Biography

“You’re not college material.” For years, this was the phrase that kept Ashford* Alum Christina Bowie from pursuing her educational dreams. 

“When I was younger, I bounced from foster home to foster home in Philadelphia,” she recalls. “I couldn’t read. I could barely write. I couldn’t do any mathematics. I hated that feeling of always getting made fun of,” she explains. 

It wasn’t until Christina was 11 years old that she was adopted and welcomed into her forever home in York, Pennsylvania.

Biography

Ashley Ihrig has a love for learning, and it shows. A member of the Golden Key International Honour Society (an invitation-only membership that applies solely to the top 15% of university students), she decided to pursue her degree at Ashford University* to foster that passion for knowledge and to have something tangible to show for it.
