Our History

The University of Arizona Global Campus has grown and transformed from a small, traditional college into a national online institution committed to supporting adult learners in realizing their personal and professional goals.

  • 1918

    The University, originally named Mount St. Clare College, was founded in 1918 by the Sisters of St. Francis in Clinton, Iowa, as a junior college for women.

  • 1950

    The College was first accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (now the Higher Learning Commission) and has maintained its institutional accreditation since that time.

  • 1967

    In 1967, 37 years after it awarded its first associate degree, Mt. St. Clare College opened its doors to men.

  • 1979

    The college received approval for its first four-year degree, a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration beginning its transformation from a junior college to a baccalaureate institution.

  • 2002-
    2004

    In December 2002, Mt. St. Clare College became The Franciscan University and the following year began to offer its first master’s degree online. In 2004, the university added to its name the qualifier, “of the Prairies” to minimize confusion with other Franciscan institutions.

  • 2005

    The Sisters of St. Francis ended their long history of sponsorship of the university in 2005. Bridgepoint Education, Inc. purchased The Franciscan University of the Prairies on March 9, 2005, and it was renamed Ashford University.

  • 2007

    While the residential campus continued to serve on ground students, the Ashford Online Center in Clinton, Iowa opened, making Ashford’s academic programs available to anyone with an Internet connection.

  • 2011

    Due to the growth of the online student population, the University’s leadership decided to move Ashford’s headquarters from Clinton, Iowa, to San Diego, California, and Ashford applied for eligibility for accreditation with the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC).

  • 2013

    In July, Ashford University became accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). In November, with the alliance formed between Ashford University and Forbes Media, the College of Business and Professional Studies became the Forbes School of Business®.

  • 2016

    The Forbes School of Business announced their new name, the Forbes School of Business and Technology®, reflecting the University’s commitment to and incorporation of technology into its academic programs.

  • 2018

    graduation cap

    In October, Ashford University and its sister institution, University of the Rockies, successfully merged to become one university and Ashford was approved to offer doctoral programs.

  • 2019

    In June, the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) reaffirmed Ashford University’s accreditation for six years with the next evaluation scheduled for spring 2025.

  • 2020

    On July 1, 2020, Ashford submitted a proposal for a Change of Control and Legal Status to WSCUC. On August 3, 2020, the University of Arizona announced its intent to create a new nonprofit entity, The University of Arizona Global Campus that would acquire Ashford University from Zovio Inc. WSCUC approved the Change of Control in November.

    On December 1, the transaction was complete and the university entered an exciting new era and became the University of Arizona Global Campus, an independent, accredited, online institution affiliated with the University of Arizona.
