Using Feedback as Academic Caring

Pre-Recorded Sessions
Return to CoC Summit

Shifting our paradigm of feedback is crucial within a Culture of Care. Thinking of feedback as an academic bid (Robinson, 2022) for care reframes our feedback into a human interaction that can bridge the virtual distance of online education. These academic bids for care become one place from which faculty can provide support within a personal learning environment (Delaney & Bets, 2022) that teaches and leads through understandable, specific, and applicable feedback. While providing feedback to create a personal learning environment, instructors support building a student’s heutagogy and support overcoming the distance of communication inherent in online learning.  This presentation will guide participants through a framework for giving feedback within a Culture of Care using the acronym PAUSE. PAUSE reminds faculty to provide praise, use feedback that is applicable, understandable, and specific, without forgetting to be encouraging. It is easy to provide feedback about areas of opportunity, but the extra time to provide positive and encouraging feedback can support a students’ persistence and know that their instructor cares about their progress.
