This session is a follow-up to the 2023 TLC (Teaching and Learning Conference) Session “Meeting the Needs of Open Access Online University Students who were Formerly Justice Involved/Formerly Incarcerated.” The Formerly Justice Involved Workgroup wants to expand on this topic and include more information on the nature of the carceral system in the U.S. and who is most impacted by that system. Faculty may encounter formerly incarcerated students in the classroom and students affiliated with others formerly or currently incarcerated. Our workshop aims to help faculty become more conscious of possible impacted students, achieve a comfort level in addressing these students in diverse situations, and guide them on ways to support them more effectively without ignoring any potential concerns. Our team will share several resources with participants and engage in discussion on various scenarios in breakout rooms to assist the audience in working with this specific student population group. Faculty and staff will offer varying perspectives with backgrounds in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, and Criminal Justice.
