  • Celebrating the Birth of the United States Air Force: Honoring a Legacy of Service and Excellence
  • Every year on September 18, Airmen, veterans, military families, and supporters celebrate the birthday of the United States Air Force. More than a celebration of a military branch, it is an opportunity to honor nearly eight decades of innovation, service, and sacrifice by the men and women who have defended our nation in the air, space, and cyberspace.

The Formation of the United States Air Force

The United States Air Force became an independent military branch on September 18, 1947, when President Harry S. Truman signed the National Security Act of 1947. Before then, military aviation was part of the U.S. Army, evolving through the Army Air Corps and later the Army Air Forces. The success of air power during World War II demonstrated the need for a separate service dedicated to air operations. Since its creation, the Air Force has become a global leader in innovation, humanitarian assistance, and national defense while remaining grounded in its core values: Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do.

Why We Celebrate the Air Force's Birthday

The Air Force's birthday is a time to recognize the dedication and achievements of generations of Airmen who have served our country with honor. It celebrates those currently serving, veterans, military families, and the civilians who support the mission. This occasion also reminds us of the Air Force's continued commitment to innovation and readiness while inspiring future generations to pursue lives of service and leadership.

Why Is the Air Force's Birthday Important to UAGC?

UAGC proudly supports military members, veterans, and their families by providing flexible educational opportunities that fit the demands of military life. The Air Force has always valued education and professional development. UAGC shares that commitment by helping Airmen earn degrees, develop leadership skills, and prepare for successful careers during and after military service. Celebrating the Air Force's birthday reinforces the university's dedication to those who serve and the partnerships that help them achieve their educational goals.

Why Is the Air Force's Birthday Important to Me?

The Air Force's birthday is especially meaningful to me because my connection to the service spans both my own career in uniform and my family. I proudly served 26 years in the United States Air Force, including 13 years in Air Force Recruiting Service, where I had the privilege of helping young men and women begin careers built on service, education, and opportunity. The Air Force shaped me as a leader and instilled values that continue to guide me today.
That legacy continues through my family. I am proud to have three sons currently serving in the United States Air Force, carrying on a tradition of service. Even more meaningful, two of them are earning their degrees through UAGC, demonstrating the same commitment to lifelong learning that the Air Force encourages.

Today, as a Military Alliance Manager with UAGC, I have the opportunity to continue serving military members in a different way — helping them achieve their educational goals and prepare for success beyond the uniform. It is incredibly rewarding to support those who have dedicated themselves to serving our nation.

Looking Ahead

As the Air Force approaches eight decades of service, it continues to evolve while remaining committed to defending our nation and developing the next generation of leaders.

For me, the Air Force's birthday is more than a celebration of history. It is a reminder of a lifetime of service, the family legacy that continues through my sons, and the privilege of helping today's Airmen build brighter futures through education.
Happy Birthday to the United States Air Force — and thank you to every Airman, past and present, for your service, sacrifice, and commitment to excellence.
