Biography

Dr. Michelle Simecek is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Foundational Studies at the University of Arizona Global Campus.  She teaches and supports faculty for both GEN102 (Digital Literacy) and GEN103 (Information Literacy) courses.   She earned her E.D. in Educational Leadership from Edgewood University, an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Colorado, and a B.S. in Spanish and Communications from the University of Wisconsin. 

Dr. Simecek brings over two decades of experience in education, including teaching, curriculum development, faculty mentoring, and student success initiatives across higher education and K–12 settings. Prior to joining the Foundational Studies division, she served as an instructor and subject matter expert in the Early Childhood Education program, where she designed courses, integrated digital learning tools, and supported students in developing effective research, communication, and professional practice skills.

Her scholarly interests include online learning engagement, new-student success and retention, learning community development, and digital literacy as a tool for empowerment and access in higher education. Dr. Simecek has presented nationally and internationally on topics such as innovative practices in virtual teaching, student sense of belonging in online environments, and strategies to support diverse learners at the entry level of university study.

Across her career—as a university professor, reading specialist, literacy coach, and instructional mentor—Dr. Simecek has centered her work on building supportive learning environments where students feel connected, capable, and confident. She is committed to helping learners develop strong digital citizenship skills, academic integrity practices, and foundational competencies that prepare them for future coursework and professional success.
