As a student veteran at the University of Arizona Global Campus (UAGC), there are a number of important things to know about your veteran education benefits to ensure you have a successful college experience. Read on to learn about your veterans benefit letter, claiming your veteran status, and avoiding interruption of your Veterans Affairs (VA) Education Benefits.
Veterans Benefit Letter
You reported on your FAFSA that you are a veteran, or that you receive veteran education benefits, so you are required to submit a Veterans Benefit letter to UAGC.
Although your VA education benefits were not used in the Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) calculation, we do need to count them as a resource when putting together your financial aid package. The total of all your resources, including your financial aid awards, cannot exceed your Cost of Attendance (COA) at UAGC.
Claiming Veteran Status
It is important to note that you are not able to claim that you are a veteran until your status has changed with the military and it is reflected on your DD-214. You will be required to provide a copy of your DD-214 when you are requesting financial aid.
Your DD-214 is the only acceptable documentation to prove that you qualify as a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces and there is no substitute for this requirement. A military ID is not acceptable because it does not show your discharge status. For a duplicate copy of your DD-214, contact the nearest VA office.
Avoid Interruption of VA Education Benefits
In order to ensure your VA education benefits aren’t interrupted, you are responsible for self-certifying at the end of every month to prove your attendance at UAGC. If you fail to self-certify, there is a possibility that your VA education benefits will be interrupted. Contact your Financial Services Advisor to make sure you are aware of your responsibilities to ensure that you continue receiving veteran benefits.
To determine your benefit status, contact a benefits counselor at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs at 1-888-GIBILL-1 (1-888-442-4551) or visit https://benefits.va.gov/gibill/. You have earned these military education benefits, so be sure you use them.
Once your benefit status has been determined, speak to a Military Enrollment Services Advisor to learn how they can best be applied to your education at UAGC.
