University of Arizona Online Integration Strategy Informed by Independent Assessment, Highlighting Enhanced Opportunities and Financial Savings

June 21, 2024

[Tucson, AZ, June 20, 2024] –– The University of Arizona announced the findings from a global services firm that support the university’s strategic rationale for establishing the University of Arizona Global Campus (UAGC) and beginning a multi-year transition to fully integrate online education. This process requires approval from the U.S. Department of Education, WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), and the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR). The assessment helps to inform the university’s planning process as the regulatory process continues.

"These findings validate our vision of integrating UAGC and Arizona Online with the University of Arizona," said Gary Packard, senior vice provost of online initiatives at the University of Arizona. "This integration will enhance our ability to deliver high-quality education to a broader range of students and strengthen our financial foundation, allowing us to continue fulfilling our land-grant mission in innovative ways."

The firm assessed the online operations of the university's two distinct online education offerings: Arizona Online and UAGC. The independent assessment, presented to ABOR on June 20, 2024, concludes that an integrated online approach could expand access to higher education consistent with the university’s land-grant mission and potentially save $12-21M annually when integration is completed.

“Expanded online higher education enhances accessibility for people whose life circumstances might impede their ability to pursue a degree in person on campus,” Packard continued. “We appreciate the assessment’s recommended emphasis on the importance of making a sustained commitment to strengthening retention and graduation rates, and we believe that integrating UAGC and Arizona Online as part of the University of Arizona is a crucial step toward providing exemplary academic instruction and support for all our students.”
