Though formed only recently in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has grown to encompass more than 20 agencies, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Transportation Security Administration, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
