The University of Arizona Global Campus unveils insights on nurturing a supportive online learning environment

January 26, 2024

[Chandler, AZ, January 25, 2024] – Researchers at the University of Arizona Global Campus (UAGC) have collaboratively unveiled key findings in their study, "Creating Care in the Online Classroom," published by IGI Global in Balance and Boundaries in Creating Meaningful Relationships in Online Higher Education. This groundbreaking research, conducted in partnership between UAGC faculty and staff in Student Affairs, the College of Arts and Sciences and the Forbes School of Business and Technology®, brings together diverse perspectives to advocate for and support a caring culture in the virtual educational landscape.

The research underscores the impact of anonymity in online learning, revealing how it can lead to a disconnect between students and faculty, resulting in communication challenges and a lack of understanding. Instances of negative impacts due to online communication, such as accusations related to the use of AI tools, highlight the need for a more empathetic approach.

A core theme emerging from the study is the critical role of trust and students matter in fostering student engagement, motivation, and overall success. The findings emphasize the significance of faculty engagement and support, urging educators to be authentic, engage in conversations, and lead with empathy.

"This research offers valuable insights into the dynamics of online learning,” said Bill Davis, program chair and assistant professor in the Forbes School of Business and Technology® at UAGC. “By understanding the challenges faced by adult online learners and implementing strategies to build trust and care, we can significantly impact student success."

UAGC is committed to advancing the discourse on effective online education and looks forward to implementing the study's recommendations to enhance the learning experience for its diverse student body.
