September 8, 2023

[Chandler, AZ, September 7, 2023] – The University of Arizona Global Campus proudly recognizes Teresa Leary Handy, Ed.D., Program Chair in the College of Arts and Sciences, for her exceptional role as a Review Committee member for the Memphis City Council HBCU Scholarship Fund, which awarded scholarships totaling $448,200 to 84 students attending 25 different Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

The Memphis City Council HBCU Scholarship Fund was established at the initiative of City Council Chairman and HBCU alumnus, Martavius Jones, with the intention of providing financial assistance to Shelby County high school graduates seeking to pursue higher education at accredited HBCUs during the 2023-24 and 2024-25 academic years. The City Council committed $1 million in American Rescue Plan Recovery Act funding to empower the dreams of these promising students.

Handy demonstrated her commitment to serving Memphis students by actively participating in the volunteer committee organized by the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis. Comprising a group of esteemed community leaders, all of whom are HBCU graduates, the committee played a crucial role in meticulously reviewing applications and diligently selecting the most deserving recipients of the scholarship awards. Last month, the scholarship recipients were honored and celebrated.

Regarding the event, Handy stated, "Serving Memphis students is so important to me. I have the honor of supporting Chairman Martavius Jones and his tireless commitment to improve the academic trajectory of our students. He and the city council have allocated millions of dollars to help Memphis students attend HBCUs."

Handy continued, "It is my honor to serve on the Review Committee hosted by the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis. There was intentionality in the selection of the committee - they sought HBCU graduates with a heart for Memphis students. We kept the standards high, and the selection process was bar none. These students were amazing, and I am proud of them! This investment helps Memphis because we want them to return and be active contributors to our community."

The University of Arizona Global Campus extends its heartfelt congratulations to Handy for her dedication and significant contribution to the Memphis City Council HBCU Scholarship Fund. Through her service and commitment to empowering the next generation of scholars, she exemplifies the university's mission of fostering excellence in education and making a positive impact on communities.
