Dr. Mingzhen Bao lives in sunny San Diego, but it’s the cloudy, rainy days that bring a smile to her face.

Using an academic voice is to write with authority on a topic.

To use an academic voice simply means to meet the writing expectations for academic writing. As with any style and type of writing, there is always a set of writing expectations for that genre. Academic writing includes some specific expectations that you should follow when doing your assignments. It is these expectations that we call “academic voice.”

Biography

Sumiko Anahy Keil is on the move. Both literally and in her professional life. A military spouse who had her first two children at a young age, she and her family find themselves moving all over the country every two to three years. Because of this, Sumiko knew a flexible online education was going to be the only way she would be able to earn a college degree.

If Dr. LaTonya Santo had her way as a teenager, she just might be a drummer today. Instead, she got kicked out of band class and ended up exactly where she was meant to be.

Growing up along the Alabama/Georgia border, the young Dr. Santo was a bit of a spitfire who clashed with her band instructor about which instrument she should play. She insisted on the drums. He wanted her to play bells. It wasn’t long before Dr. Santo and a few other unenthusiastic band members were booted from the class.

According to Sarah White (2012), “People in a market economy become consumers when they are driven to fulfill their needs and desires through exchanges” (p.11). Today there are all kinds of exchanges. The internet, for example, has created a fast-paced, ever-changing global marketplace. Companies today are global, aggressive in seeking opportunities, and they are highly competitive.
