Biography

Tiffany Jacobs had been working at a bank in her hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan, while also attending a traditional four-year college, when the Great Recession hit in the late 2000s. Like many Americans, she was stung hard and became one of the 8.7 million people who found themselves out of work. Without a job, and feeling uninspired by her educational pursuits, she left school and her hometown behind to seek opportunity in a larger city.

If at first you don’t succeed, never, ever stop trying. As current student Jade Poates has discovered, it may have taken her a few attempts to go back to school — four to be exact —but this go-around, she’s nailing it. Not only is she on the Dean’s List, as well as a member of the Golden Key Honour Society, but she serves as a founding officer for the newly established Ashford* Black Community (ABC) Club on LinkedIn.

Despite facing a big hurdle their sophomore year, Rebecca Wolfe and Ashlyn Hemmer say it is definitely their strong friendship that helped them graduate together from Ashford University* in 2018. Their excitement around seeing each other in person for the first time since last July was visible as we sat down the day before graduation to talk to them about their emotional journey together the past four years.

Dr. Stephen Brewer is an Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona Global Campus. In addition to his work in the virtual classroom, Dr. Brewer is the founding faculty advisor for the Online Psychology Club. Founded in 2012, officially recognized in 2013, and comprised of over 6,000 members – including students, staff, faculty, and alumni – the club is the university’s oldest and largest. Dr.
