In 2025, the University of Arizona Global Campus (UAGC) announced the formation of the UAGC Student Government Association (SGA) — a dedicated student leadership body committed to enhancing student life, fostering meaningful communication between students and university leadership, and advocating for the diverse needs of the student body.

The initiative marks a significant milestone in the University’s ongoing mission to empower students and ensure their voices are actively heard across the university community.

“With the launch of SGA, we open the door to greater connection, collaboration, and community,” said SGA Advisor and Student Affairs Program Manager Matt Phillips. “The SGA is built on the belief that when students have a voice, they don’t just shape their own experience—they strengthen the fabric of UAGC for everyone.”

What is the UAGC Student Government Association?

The UAGC Student Government Association (SGA) is an officially recognized student organization designed to facilitate open communication between students and University leadership. Governed by its Constitution and Bylaws, the SGA serves as a vital platform for students to voice their concerns, contribute to university policies, and participate in initiatives that shape the student experience at UAGC.

"Empowering students with a voice in university processes and procedures fosters a sense of belonging and accountability, leading to increased engagement and a stronger academic community," said SGA Faculty Advisor and Assistant Professor James Bond.

Membership in the UAGC SGA includes all enrolled active students, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to be represented and involved.

  • Key Functions of the UAGC SGA include:
Advocate for student interests: Serve as the unified voice of the student body to university leadership, advocating for issues related to educational access, student services, and the overall online student experience.
  • Enhance student engagement: Facilitate opportunities for students to engage in meaningful dialogue with faculty, staff, and fellow students.
  • Promote equity and inclusion: Uphold values of respect, inclusivity, and integrity in every aspect of student life.
  • Support student organizations: Approve budget requests for student clubs and organizations, ensuring resources are allocated to enhance student activities and community involvement.

SGA Leadership

The UAGC SGA Executive Board is composed of five student-appointed officers:

  • President
  • Vice President
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Student Organization Liaison

Each officer plays a critical role in advancing the SGA’s mission and fostering a collaborative student community. Executive Board members serve a one-year term, with the opportunity to serve up to two consecutive terms.

Interested students must meet specific eligibility criteria, including academic standing requirements, leadership experience, and a commitment to representing the student body with integrity and respect.

Empowering Student Voices

The SGA’s vision is to cultivate a dynamic and inclusive university community where student voices are heard, valued, and respected. Through advocacy, open communication, and leadership development, the SGA aims to empower students to actively shape the direction of UAGC policies and initiatives.

“Our goal is to provide every student with the opportunity to contribute to the future of UAGC,” said SGA Advisor and Student Affairs Program Manager Matt Phillips. “We are here to listen, advocate, and ensure that all students feel connected and supported.”

Why Student Involvement Matters

  • Influence University policies: Play a role in shaping university initiatives that directly impact your student experience.
Develop leadership skills: Gain valuable leadership and advocacy experience.
Foster community connections: Build relationships with fellow students, faculty, and University leaders.
Make a difference: Be a voice for change and help create a more vibrant and inclusive UAGC community.

Commitment to Integrity, Inclusivity, and Compliance
The UAGC SGA operates under strict policies of non-discrimination, non-hazing, and compliance with all university, state, and federal regulations. The organization is dedicated to fostering a safe, respectful, and equitable environment for all students, regardless of background or identity.

Get Involved with UAGC SGA

Students are encouraged to participate in SGA meetings, which are held at least twice per academic quarter. Special meetings and public forums provide additional opportunities for students to engage with the SGA and influence important decisions affecting the student body.

Students interested in joining the UAGC SGA Executive Board or participating in SGA activities can learn more on UAGC Connect. Applications for Executive Board positions and opportunities to participate in various committees will be posted in the final quarter of each academic year.
