Biography

Dr. Adkins earned her Doctorate in Education with an emphasis in Professional Studies from Capella University, a Master in Teaching in Elementary/Early Childhood Education from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a B.A. in Economics from the College of William and Mary. She had initially begun a career in the private sector as a financial analyst before realizing her calling to education. For seven years, she worked in the public-school system as an elementary school teacher and mathematics coach before embarking on a career in higher education instructing and mentoring future teachers. She currently serves as the Program Chair for the Master of Arts in Education program and is a member of the Faculty Support and Development Committee. Dr. Adkins has a passion for course development and serving as a site reviewer for accrediting bodies. She has served as a CAEP site reviewer and had the opportunity to engage in several site review visits at other institutions.

Her favorite thing about teaching is the dialogue that occurs within the discussion forum and the sharing of ideas. “Students come from all walks of life that include a multitude of experiences, which only opens our minds to new perspectives. Those new perspectives help us all to develop greater empathy for one another." Dr. Adkins resides in Virginia, with her husband and two children. They truly love the outdoors and find any opportunity to go camping.
