What Can I Do with an Accounting Degree Besides Accounting?

By University Staff

searching for careers other than accounting

Updated: July 27, 2021

Aside from a general business degree, a Bachelor of Accounting degree is one of the most versatile diplomas students can earn. It opens doors for anything from entry-level at a small private practice to leading a major corporation.

Significant numbers of accounting majors work in finance and operations; while sales, entrepreneurship and a range of other careers are also represented. There are more than two dozen professions in all, a clear indicator of the versatility of an accounting degree.

Jobs for Accounting Majors Other Than Accounting

Here are some of the possible doors that can open with an accounting degree:

1. Work at a for-profit business

Entry-level positions involving record keeping and checking for accuracy are often open to those without college degrees. They’re a great way to gain experience and earn a paycheck while still in school. For graduates, opportunities are available at almost any business with an accounting department.

2. Banking

Accounting majors will find a range of opportunities in this industry, too. In addition to traditional accounting work, many banks turn to accountants when filling financial and business analyst positions as well.

3. Tax preparation

From working for a large firm to opening up your own shop, accounting majors find many opportunities in tax preparation. Many businesses also hire tax accountants to help them achieve their financial goals.

4. Non-profit organizations

Just as a for-profit company must keep its financial house in order, so must charities. Traditionally, the pay isn’t as lucrative at a non-profit, but the non-monetary rewards can be much richer.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics sees the demand for accountants continuing to grow through at least 2022, with jobs in some specialties expected to increase at a faster rate than overall projected jobs growth.

A good accounting program, such as the one at the Forbes School of Business® at the University of Arizona Global Campus, teaches more than number crunching. Accounting majors learn the language of business and they develop the solid analytical skills a successful business leader needs requires.

A Bachelor of Accounting degree is a great way to start a career in business, whether you want to be an accountant or not. Choosing an online degree program will allow you to pursue your career and educational goals while still spending time with friends and family. The investment in your education lasts a lifetime. It’s never too late to start.
